OVERVIEW

Pieffe has concentrated its core-business on cast polyurethane creating a series of production lines ranging from very low harness polyurethane (5/10 shore “A”) to higher hardness levels (85/90 shore “D”). Thanks to its extensive product range, some of which are specifically formulated for in-house laboratory applications, means that Pieffe is able to resolve even the most complex problems in a whole host of industrial sectors.

Thanks to the considerable flexibility of its production plants it is able to guarantee the production of polyurethane small parts as well as large sized and complex manufactured items. As well as small scale productions (starting from single prototypes) to those on a large scale.
The impeccable quality of Pieffe products means that they can be used in a whole host of production contexts, from the textile to the food sector, from the pharmaceutical-sanitary field to the steel and iron processing fields, from the automotive to the mining sectors, from offshore to the glass processing sector, from packaging to paper industry, not to mention wood workmanship and refuse sorting right up to the provision of ancillary components for the naval and aerospace sectors.

Pieffe production also includes the polyurethane coating of wheels, rollers, cylinders and drums of any hardness and colour with dimensions of up to 1250 mm in diameter and 5000 mm in length. Furthermore, thanks to a modern and well equipped mechanical department, Pieffe is capable of supplying its clients with such articles inclusive of cores and metallic parts.

PRODUCTS

Serie P

Compact polyurethane elastomer, ethers and esters, with a variable hardness of between 60 and 98 Shore A, and between 60 and 85 Shore D.

HARDNESS AND RESILIENCE

There are few products that offer the combination of hardness and resilience as this product. The composites that have a hardness of 95 Shore A, for example, are sufficiently elastic as to resist stretching to over four times their original dimension.
The standard formulations of ADIPRENE® conserve their resilience even when subjected to temperature changes, much better than the traditional rubbers with a temperature range of between +10 °C a +110 °C. Such stability is essential in applications such as shock absorbers and supports.

LOAD CAPACITY

The load capacity of articles made of ADIPRENE® is much greater than that of conventional elastomers and comparable with that of structural plastic materials, whilst maintaining the resilience of a true elastomer. So that as a technical material it strikes good compromise between rubber and plastic materials.

RESISTANCE TO MECHANICAL WEAR

The exceptional abrasion resistance of ADIPRENE® has permitted its use in a variety of importance applications, in which a high degree of wear is a serious problem. In actual performance ADIPRENE has overtaken other types of rubber, plastic materials and even metals, often by a ratio of 100 to 1.
L’ADIPRENE® boasts a far greater impact resistance than that of other structural plastic materials and in low temperature conditions it far exceeds that of conventional polyurethanes.

FRICTION COEFFICIENT

L’ADIPRENE® (self-lubricating) has a low friction coefficient that diminishes in an inversely proportional manner as the hardness increases.
This feature, together with a superior abrasion resistance and a high load capacity, means that ADIPRENE is often used in bushings and bearings.

MACHINE TOOL PROCESSING

Certain ADIPRENE® formulations are in fact sufficiently rigid to be processed using traditional machine tools by specialized operators that are familiar with the normal processing procedures of plastic materials.

RESISTANCE TO EXTREME TEMPERATURES
Hot – Articles made of ADIPRENE® assure excellent performance at high temperatures. The temperature limit being usually of 90 °C for continuous use and of 120 °C for intermittent exposures. Whilst in the case of optimum formulations it is possible to reach peaks of between 130 – 140 °C.
Cold– ADIPRENE® remains flexible at even very low temperatures and is exceptionally resistant to temperature variations. Standard formulations do not become any more delicate up to temperatures of -73 °C (100 °F), although it will gradually become more brittle as the temperature falls to under -18°C (-0.4 °F). It is however possible to create special formulations capable of preserving a certain degree of flexibility even at temperatures of -90°C (-130°F). ADIPRENE® is successfully used at cryogenic temperatures in the handling of non-oxidized liquefied gases.

ELECTRICAL PROPRIETIES

ADIPRENE® has been used in compositions for capping and isolation at up to 100 kilohertz and temperatures of 110 °C (230 °F). The base polymer may be modified using epoxy resins to enhance its electrical properties and improve its hardness.

RESISTANCE TO OILS, FATS AND CHEMICAL AGENTS
ADIPRENE® is exceptionally resistance to oils and solvents, so that the articles made of this material are particularly suited for use in the presence of lubricants and fuels used in the automotive field.

RESISTANCE TO SUN, THE OZONE AND OTHER ATMOSPHERC AGENTS

Atmospheric conditions do not in any way jeopardize the performance of ADIPRENE®. Prolonged exposure to UV rays may eventually darken and imperceptibly weaken reduce the physical properties of the articles made of ADIPRENE®, without in any way causing any functional deterioration.
Oxygen and ozone in atmospheric concentrations have no perceptible effects on ADIPRENE®: formulations exposed to 300 pphm of ozone in static conditions and under pressure for 500 hours for example, show no signs of flaking or breakage.

RESISTANCE TO OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

ADIPRENE® resists swelling and other damaging effects caused by water immersion.
The standard formulations do not facilitate fungal growth and they are generally resistant to micro-organism attack. Prolonged warehouse storage or prolonged use under normal service conditions do not pose any problem for ADIPRENE®.
ADIPRENE® is also exceptionally resistant to gamma radiations: these articles are capable of providing excellent service even when exposed to relatively high radiation concentrations of 1 x 107 J/Kg (1 x 109 rads).
Under forced vacuum conditions articles made of ADIPRENE® are highly stable; they do not contain solvents and are found to lose the minimum of weight during standard degassing tests.

FLAME RESISTANCE

ADIPRENE products offer limited flame resistance. PIEFFE has arranged for special formulations to be tested, by accredited bodies of the Ministry of the Interior for use in the rail and tram sector.

RESTORATION AFTER DEFORMATION

ADIPRENE articles show a good degree of resistance to permanent compression deformation.
This explains why they are used as counter-forms for dies in sheet shaping, in which thousands of operations are usually undertaken.
